Fungal Nail
Nail fungus is a common condition and can occur on any nail, but toenails are about 25 times more likely to be affected. A fungal nail infection will cause a thickening, discolouration, splitting and lifting of the nail, and growth may be slow and painful. For successful treatment, the chain of infection must be broken. To help do this, please follow the before and aftercare advice below.
Benefits
- Quick treatment times
- Topical and direct
- Suitable for patients with low immunity or liver and renal dysfunction
- Usually, 3 to 6 treatments are required every 2 to 4 weeks, and it will take six months to one year for your nail to fully regrow after treatments. While recurrence of infection is unlikely, some fungal infections may return and require additional treatments.
Before Treatment
- If the nail is thick, file down gently the night before treatment.
- Bring a spare pair of clean socks to wear after your treatment.
- Remove nail varnish/ gel polish.
During Treatment
The laser is pulsed over each nail and the surrounding skin. This creates a heat reaction underneath the nail plate which heats and destroys the fungus over multiple treatments.
After Treatment
- Wash feet every day and dry well between the toes.
- Apply Dactarin, or another anti-fungal cream, twice a day, morning and night after washing feet.
- Keep nails short and cut straight across and always cut infected nails last.
- Always wear clean socks daily and wear clean socks at night time as the fungus can spread onto bed clothes.
- Wear flip-flops or equivalent when showering or in public bathing areas.
- Do not share towels with anyone.
- Disinfect shower/bathroom floor with bleach.
- Limit nail polish use – this can trap moisture and worsen the infection.
- Wash bedding, towels etc., on a 60+ degree wash.
- Disinfect shoes with anti-fungal products frequently.
- Limit nail polish use – this can trap moisture and worsen the infection.
